Reteti Elephant Sanctuary Samburu, Kenya.

Reteti Elephant Sanctuary is Africa's first community-owned elephant sanctuary, situated in Northern Kenya. The sanctuary was established in 2016 within the Namunyak Wildlife Conservancy. Its mission is to rescue, rehabilitate, and release orphaned and abandoned elephant calves back into the wild herds adjoining Reteti.

The sanctuary plays a crucial role in addressing the challenges faced by elephant calves in Northern Kenya. These calves are often orphaned or abandoned due to various reasons, including drought, man-made wells, human-wildlife conflict, and natural mortality. Between 10 and 25 elephant calves are rescued in Northern Kenya each year.
What makes Reteti unique is that it is community-driven conservation. The local Samburu community owns and manages the sanctuary. The Samburu people have lived alongside wildlife for thousands of years and share their land and resources with elephants. The elephant keepers at Reteti are all recruited from within the indigenous Samburu community. They have been formally trained in the care, rehabilitation, and release of elephant calves.
